What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery makes your stomach smaller, reducing it to a one-ounce, egg-sized pouch that allows food to bypass or go around part of your small intestine.

Changing the size of your stomach helps you to feel full more quickly compared to when your stomach was its original size. When you feel full, the amount of food you eat and the calories you consume are lower. Bypassing part of your intestine also causes your body to absorb fewer calories. This leads to weight loss.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The most common type of bariatric surgery in the United States is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. During this procedure, your surgeon will make your stomach smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of your stomach using surgical staples.

The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine.

Gastric Bypass Results

For many patients, gastric bypass surgery helps patients lose weight permanently.

  • Patients lose about 60-80 percent of extra weight in 12-24 months.
  • Most patients gain back less than 15 percent of their weight after five to 10 years.
